H.S. Football: All Saints shuts down Newsom, Midland Christian

The Midland Christian Mustangs were held to 54 yards passing and gave up a punt return touchdown in a 14-7 loss to the All Saints Saints in Fort Worth.

The Mustangs scored first, capitalizing on an interception deep in All Saints territory, taking a 7-0 lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half on a run by senior running back Brylee Perez.

But two minutes later, All Saints senior star Kevin Dodard returned a punt 47 yards for a score to tie the game.

The Saints junior quarterback Kelden Ryan scored the game's only other touchdown, a 47 yard run with three minutes remaining in the game.

A 6'2, 200 pound junior, Ryan is committed to Virginia Tech.

The 5'11, 175 pound Dodard holds Division I scholarship offers from Colgate, Lafayette, Furman and Missouri State.

Perez paced the Mustangs with 76 yards rushing on 23 attempts.

Senior quarterback Colton Newsom completed seven of 18 passes for 45 yards. He also rushed 18 times for 49 yards. 

Newsom, who has a Division I offer from Valparaiso, has thrown for 1,072 yards this season and is averaging 171 yards per game passing. He has thrown for nine touchdowns.

Defensively, sophomore middle linebacker Brady Young had 13 tackles and sophomore defensive linemen Isaiah Mathews and Coy Hayes each had 11 tackles for Midland Christian.

The Mustangs, who beat All Saints 28-26 last year and lost to them 34-22 in 2021, fell to 2-4 on the season. All Saints improved to 5-1.

The Mustangs host the undefeated Argyle Liberty Christian Warriors (6-0) on Friday.

Liberty Christian beat Fort Worth Christian 85-13 on Fri. Oct. 6.

Last year, Midland Chrstian lost 24-14 to the Warriors.
