On July 31, the first of three new I-20 bridges opened to Midland motorists, according to a recent press release from the Texas Department of Transportation (DOT). Located at County Road 1250, the new bridge now used by I-20 travelers in Midland initially required main lane traffic to shift onto the new structure for the first two days following its opening.

“Vehicles on I-20 will now pass over County Road 1250,” the release explains. “This overpass configuration will eliminate the risk of bridge strikes on I-20 by trucks.”

Prior to the bridge’s launch on July 31, drivers did not have access to a connection located between south of the interstate along Cholla Road and Antelope Trail, according to the press release.

“This new connection, along with the temporary signal on Antelope Trail at CR 120 and the CR 114 improvements at Rankin Highway, provides commuters south of I-20 with additional options for north-south travel along Rankin Highway (SH 349) and LP 250,” the press release states.

Upon completion, the Midkiff, Cotton Flat and CR 1250 will be safer and more efficient for travelers and truck drivers.

Midkiff Road is expected to open under the new bridge by the beginning of Spring 2024, followed by the opening of Cotton Flat, set to open to north-south traffic later in the spring of 2024.

Construction was carried out by Pulice Construction, which was selected for the project with a bid of approximately $59.1 million. James Construction was selected for the Midkiff Bridge project with a bid of approximately $36.3 million, and FNF Construction is working on the Cotton Flat Bridge project with a bid of approximately $68.5 million.

Maryann Cedillo has been listed as the main point of contact for all three projects.
