Mayor Payton is linking up with Keep Midland Beautiful to motivate residents to retain the city's cleanliness throughout the summer months.

Suns Up, Get Up, Clean Up will last from June through August and Midland citizens are encouraged to keep the community they live in clean, according to NewsWest9.

"Thanks to everyone who came out last night to help @keepmidlandbeautiful!! In a short thirty minutes our team had over 12 bags full of trash. Way to go!!" Payton tweeted.

Payton and other volunteers helped clean up on the evening of Jun. 16.

The mayor and several citizens picked up trash along the Loop 250 waterway. Anyone was welcome to volunteer, and participants received a free Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit from Whataburger.

Established in 1983, Keep Midland Beautiful is a Non-Profit 501(c)3 that works with the City of Midland.

"We're going to have to pick up after one another after we pick up after ourselves," Payton said according to NewsWest9. "Maybe after time that pride will begin to spread and people will pick up trash and litter anywhere they see it."

A survey listed by Keep Midland Beautiful called "The Litter Index", measuring an annual spatial distribution of loose trash, reveals that the average reduction of litter in Midland from the 1983 baseline is 95%.

Keep Midland Beautiful has won several awards, including 2020 President's Circle Award, Gold Star Affiliate and Texas Governor's Community Achievement, among others.
