The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced the death of 38-year-old Trooper Chad Walker who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Limestone County on March 26.

Walker was shot multiple times after stopping on the side of FM 2383, outside of Mexia, to help a broken-down vehicle, KXAN reports. The suspect, 36-year-old DeArthur Pinson Jr., then fled the scene. Walker was then rushed to a Waco hospital in critical condition and later died on March 31 as the result of his injuries.

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that DPS announces the passing of Trooper Chad Walker. Trooper Walker is a hero who bravely served his community. He died following injuries sustained while on patrol," the Texas DPS said in a Facebook post. "A beloved father and husband, Trooper Walker was one of DPS’ finest. His dedication to duty and his selfless sacrifice, in both life and his death, will never be forgotten."

Gov. Greg Abbott said this incident is a stark reminder of law enforcement officers putting their lives on the line daily when doing their job.

"Trooper Walker’s tragic murder in the line of duty is a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day to keep us safe. Texas stands with our law enforcement, and we're indebted to the sacrifices they make to serve & protect our communities," Abbott said in a Tweet.

The Texas DPS Director Steven McCraw said that Walker's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

“Our DPS family is absolutely heartbroken at the loss of one of our brothers in uniform who was killed in the line of duty,” McCraw said in a DPS announcement. “Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Walker was committed to protecting the people of Texas. His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we ask that you keep his family, friends and colleagues in your prayers during the difficult days ahead.”

The Texas DPS Officers Association confirmed that Walker was shot in the head and abdomen by Pinson Jr., which proved to be fatal shots.

Pinson Jr., was later found dead at a residence on Highway 84, west of Mexia, and Texas DPS believes he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, KXAN reported.

Walker was an 18-year veteran of law enforcement and had joined the Texas DPS in 2015. Walker was also a husband and father of four.
