A Midland mom wanted to celebrate her daughter’s high school graduation amid the coronavirus shutdown, so she decorated their front door with her graduation gown.

With schools closed across the Permian Basin, Texas and the rest of the country, celebration of individual successes seem to disappear. Everyone is stuck inside their homes except for essential travel  like trips to the grocery store or doctor, or a bit of exercise outside. That wasn’t good enough for Veronica Villanueva.

She got the idea from a Facebook post. Then her brother gave her the push to decorate her family’s front door to show some love for her daughter and other high school seniors.

“This is the first one, but hopefully by next week there will be many more just to support our seniors and what we're going through, what they're going through," she told KOSA.

And what does Yasmine think about the decorated door?

“It's a message that I made it this far. That I'm going to go far in life and accomplish all my goals," Yasmine told KOSA. "My parents, my mom show me that they're really supportive through everything that's going on."

Veronica still has hopes her daughter can wear the cap and gown at a graduation ceremony.

"We're going to continue to pray that they can walk the stage somehow, someway," Veronica told KOSA. " You know, do some form of graduation, maybe not at the school, but some way."

But with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott extending school closures at least through May, it could be a long time before the Villanueva family can make that march happen.
