A local business is offering up free meals to the first responders who have worked the front lines in an effort to combat the COVID-19 virus.

Opal's Table in Midland is offering up to 500 free meals to the local heroes and anyone else who is in need of a free meal during these trying times.

“I think our ultimate goal is to get groups of firefighters and nurses and stuff like that, which we've been pretty successful at the moment, to subscribe to weekly deliveries and pickups," Opal’s Table owner Chip Hight recently told CBS 7.

Hight, who named his restaurant after his grandmother, says he's embodying her character by caring for others, paying his gratitude forward to his community, hoping that others will do the same in return.

“We're just sort of compelled to do something positive and help since we can and also help some of our staff here," Hight said. "Lots of restaurant layoffs this week so we're trying to keep the oxygen flowing in here a little bit and also provide what we think is a pretty needed service near in the future."

But High isn’t alone, as those helping him in the restaurant also have a strong passion for helping the community that they appreciate so much.

"I found today that I was able to deliver meals to three fire stations,” volunteer Leigha McBride told CBS 7. “And getting to serve the community I think was the most rewarding.”

The smallest act of kindness could shine a light of positivity on others during times of uncertainty – and Hight hopes to accomplish just that in an effort to unite such a disconnected community.

“So far the most rewarding part is being able to serve everyone in the community and also being able to get out of the house to do something positive,” Hight said.
