The baseball season is over for Midland Junior College but Deylan Pigford had a big win off the field to secure athlete of the week honors.
The sophomore outfielder has accepted a scholarship offer to play for West Coast power Cal State Fullerton next season. Pigford had a strong season for the Chapparals, hitting .361 with four home runs, 17 RBI and 30 runs. It was an effort the Titans feel will translate well at the NCAA Division 1 level.
Pigford told the Midland Times he received the offer after the Cal-State Fullerton coaching staff spoke with regional scouts. He was highly recommended as a left-handed hitting outfielder with speed to burn.
In an abbreviated season, Pigford helped lead Midland Junior College to an 11-9 record that included a 4-0 mark in region play. The season ended prematurely with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic but his experience in Midland paid off.
“I drastically improved,” he told the Times. “The coaches were awesome and really know their stuff. I became 10 times better.”
