The Midland Fire Department (MFD) is currently conducting its annual Fill the Boot campaign, as mentioned in a Facebook post.
According to the March 21 post, the fire department is raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The campaign began on March 24. There will be two more opportunities for the community to contribute on March 26 and 28. Firefighters will be stationed at two locations—Midkiff Road and Wadley Avenue, and Andrews Highway and Midland Drive—to collect donations in boots, with each event starting at 9 a.m. "Every dollar counts, and your support makes a difference," MFD wrote in the post.
According to the MDA’s website, Fill the Boot is a partnership between MDA and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) with roots that date back to 1954. The IAFF signed a proclamation designating MDA as its charity of choice.
The Mayo Clinic defines muscular dystrophy as a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Males are usually the most affected, with symptoms starting in childhood while others are not detected until adulthood. While there is no cure, medications and therapy help treat the disease.
