Midland Christian School has announced that a former NFL player will take over the reins of its football program.
"Welcome to the family Coach Dawson," the school said on Facebook. "A state champion, transformative HS head coach and NFL legend has officially been named our next head coach."
According to Midland Christian Football’s Facebook page, Phil Dawson had a 21-year career in the NFL as a punter, including stints in Cleveland, San Francisco, and Arizona. He was previously the head coach at Austin-based Hyde Park and led the program to three consecutive playoff appearances. Dawson achieved 19 wins after taking over a program with only two wins in the previous three years.
"I am fired up to be the next football coach at Midland Christian School," said Dawson in a video posted on Facebook. "I can’t wait to get to Midland, get boots on the ground, and get to work." He added that the Bible says, "Work with all your heart unto the lord and not to man. We will do that with Mustang football. We will build upon the rich history, tradition, and the solid foundation that has already been put in place thanks to all of your heart work."
