Midland has been identified as one of the most dynamic metropolitan areas in the United States, according to a think tank specializing in economic trends.

The city's economy, heavily influenced by the oil industry, has resulted in a per capita income of $151,400 and short-term GDP growth that ranks first on a recent list. Other cities in the top five include Wildwood-The Villages, Florida; Bozeman, Montana; the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metro area; and Naples-Marco Island, Florida.

According to a news release from Heartland Forward, benchmarks such as employment, average annual pay, real GDP growth, per capita income, and measures of entrepreneurial activity were utilized in the 2024 Most Dynamic Metropolitans report. This report assessed 380 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) across the country to provide insights for lawmakers and stakeholders aiming to make informed decisions regarding regional growth.

Ross DeVol, CEO and chairman of Heartland Forward, expressed hope that policymakers will use the report's findings to guide their decisions. "These leading metros demonstrate how strategic investments in AI, advanced manufacturing, tourism, and energy can create dynamic economic growth and resilient communities," he said. DeVol also noted appreciation for "the mayors and economic development teams whose hard work is reflected in the rankings."
