Midland College (MC) is inviting the public to an event focused on learning and discussing ways to mitigate human trafficking within the community.
The institution's Blue Sand Event aims to raise awareness about the issue and demonstrate support for victims. "In honor of #HumanTraffickingAwarenessDay, we'd like to invite you to join us on January 23rd at 12:30 PM in the Scharbauer Student Center for a special proclamation reading and Blue Sand Pouring Event in recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month," MC said in a Facebook post. The Midland Rape Crisis and Children's Advocacy Center is co-organizing the event.
According to Eventbrite.com, similar events will be held on January 15 in Andrews and on January 28 in Big Spring. The Scharbauer Student Center is located on the MC campus at 3900 N. Garfield St. People interested in attending the free event can reserve a spot on the Eventbrite website as attendees will scatter blue sand in the cracks of sidewalks during the festivity.
According to the U.S Department of State, over 27.6 million people are being trafficked worldwide, including adults and children in America. Human Trafficking Prevention Month was established in 2010 to educate the public on how to highlight this problem and use citizens as assets to help recognize context clues of the crime.
