The United Way of Midland's ninth annual Power of the Purse fundraiser, which raises funds through an evening of bingo, designer handbags, and community spirit, took place Nov. 2.
The event supports the United Way of Midland's Innovative Grants, which enhance the health, education, and self-sufficiency of Midland residents. Power of the Purse serves as the primary funding source for these grants, which have provided more than $600,000 to support local initiatives since 2013.
This year’s handbag lineup included designer names like Tory Burch, Consuela, Coach, and Louis Vuitton. Honored at the event was Deborah Markley, recipient of the 2024 Women’s United Award. Markley has held leadership roles on the United Way of Midland's board and finance committee, and has helped the oil and gas industry by mentoring young professionals and advocating for girls in STEM fields through programs like "Introduce a Girl to Engineering."
Power of the Purse received support from local businesses and community members who sponsored tables, donated items, and underwrote the event.
