The United Way of Midland's ninth annual Power of the Purse fundraiser, which raises funds through an evening of bingo, designer handbags, and community spirit, will take place on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m.

The event supports the United Way of Midland's Innovative Grants, which enhance the health, education, and self-sufficiency of Midland residents. Power of the Purse serves as the primary funding source for these grants, which have provided more than $600,000 to support local initiatives since 2013.

Megan Davis, United Way of Midland's director of marketing and special events, explained how the event has evolved from a luncheon supporting the Ready to Read initiative.

“What started as a smaller luncheon has grown into a lively, sold-out evening event that draws more than 300 guests,” Davis said. “We've transformed it into something our community really looks forward to, with eight rounds of bingo, a wine pull, raffle opportunities, and shopping with local vendors.”

This year’s designer handbag lineup includes sought-after names like Tory Burch, Consuela, Coach, and Louis Vuitton, adding excitement and glamor to the evening.

Honored at the event will be Deborah Markley, recipient of the 2024 Women’s United Award. Markley has dedicated years of service to the Midland community, including leadership roles on the United Way of Midland's board and finance committee. She also remains active in the oil and gas industry, mentoring young professionals and advocating for girls in STEM fields through programs like "Introduce a Girl to Engineering."

Power of the Purse has received support from local businesses and community members, who have sponsored tables, donated items, and underwritten the event.

“The response from the community has been outstanding,” Davis said. “We’ve grown by more than 100 attendees since 2022, which speaks to the dedication and generosity of Midland’s local businesses and individuals.”

For those unable to attend, there are other ways to support the event. A raffle for a coveted Louis Vuitton NeoNoe handbag is open to anyone interested in contributing to United Way’s Innovative Grants.

"Anyone can participate and have an impact, even if they can’t make it in person,” Davis said. Raffle tickets and donations can be made online, ensuring that all funds raised continue to drive positive change in the Midland community.
