A Midland-based company, AST SpaceMobile, has announced the deployment of five commercial satellites in space. These satellites are part of the first and only global cellular broadband network intended to operate directly from space.
According to a news release, AST SpaceMobile recently deployed five satellites named BlueBird. Each satellite measures 693 square feet when fully unfolded, making them the largest commercial communications arrays in low Earth orbit.
The BlueBirds are currently preparing for commercial and U.S. government operations. The Midland Times reported that AST SpaceMobile has become a prime contractor for the Space Development Agency (SDA) to manufacture products for the Hybrid Acquisition for Proliferated Low-Earth Orbit (HALO) program.
"The unfolding of the first five commercial satellites is a significant milestone for the company," said Abel Avellan, founder, chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile. "These five satellites are the largest commercial communications arrays ever launched in low Earth orbit." Avellan added that commissioning these satellites is a significant achievement and that they are now accelerating their path to commercial activity.
According to the news release, AST SpaceMobile aims to provide cell coverage throughout America by partnering with leading cell phone providers. Beyond commercial cell phone coverage, the company plans to deliver advanced space-based solutions for various government endeavors.
