Tawanna Flowers, a coach at Trinity School of Midland, brings a wealth of experience to her position. She focuses on building athletes and individuals. Now in her third year, Coach Flowers leads both the boys and girls basketball teams for grades 7 through 12, and serves as the basketball coordinator.
Flowers was recruited from the Fort Worth area, and was sought out by staff at Trinity due to her reputation and focus on teaching fundamentals, which she believes are key to success for players and coaches
In an interview with Midland Times, Flowers emphasizes that "basketball is more than just the game" and that it teaches important life lessons, such as personal responsibility and setting oneself up for success. Her coaching philosophy revolves around discipline and leadership, principles she instills in her players, many of whom come from football backgrounds and serve as natural leaders on the boys team, according to Flowers.
On the girls team, many players have previously worked with Flowers, which gives them an understanding of the importance of “honing in and listening” to succeed. Flowers holds early morning gym workouts, and is always there to support her athletes.
Flowers has coached at an “elite level”, where one of her former students, Madison Williams, earned a spot on the McDonald’s All-American team and received a full-ride scholarship. Coach Flowers remains connected with former players and coaches, underscoring her belief that “basketball is way more than the game or the score.”
Midlanders can catch the Trinity Chargers in action at upcoming games as they look to showcase their growth and teamwork. Stay tuned for game schedules to be posted by Midland Times when they become available.
