American Legion Auxiliary Unit 19 of Midland was recognized on October 10 during an awards ceremony at Senior Life Midland. U.S. Rep. August Pfluger and Unit 19 President Janie Bennett spoke at the event about the auxiliary's work for veterans and their families across Texas. The Midland Times covered the event.

Unit 19 received the “most awards of all units in Texas.” This included one of four national "Best Unit Children and Youth" awards. The unit also won for promoting family days at the post, Texas Best Americanism Award, best legislative report award at the state level and within the National Southern Division, and numerous others.

Pfluger and Bennett presented awards to all members of Unit 19.

Kirwan-Haynie, who is the Executive Director of Senior Life Midland and an advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities, received a surprise award from the Department of Texas for Texas Legislator of the Year.

She was acknowledged for her efforts to pass Daniel's Law, named after her brother who passed away from kidney failure in 2015 after being denied a transplant due to his intellectual disabilities, and another law that removed a derogatory term from Texas legal documents.

“I’m honored to receive this on behalf of Daniel. It’s his birthday month,” Kirwan-Haynie said.

Bennett noted that the legislative changes have “impacted the lives of over 66,000 military veterans and their families who have intellectual disabilities.” Pfluger, speaking on the importance of the American Legion, reflected on his family's military service and the value of the organization to veterans and their communities.

The American Legion Auxiliary supports the community through outreach initiatives. Unit 19 provides care packages for deployed service members, hosts events for military families, and works with local schools to promote patriotism and educate youth on the importance of civic duty.

The Auxiliary also aids homeless veterans, organizes fundraising drives, and participates in local service projects.
