On May 10, Andrew Sanchez will become the first in his family to graduate from college. He will receive an associate degree in Business and plans to continue his education at Midland College toward a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Organizational Management. Sanchez aims to eventually start his own business.
Despite not considering himself a social media influencer, Sanchez has over 65,000 followers on TikTok. Advertisers pay him to promote products related to K-pop and anime through his posts. Recently, he traveled to Los Angeles courtesy of Rakuten Viki, an international video streaming website.
“I started this as a hobby during COVID,” Sanchez said. “One day I posted a video of myself being funny and imitating my favorite group Blackpink, a K-pop girl group. I couldn’t believe the people that liked it, so I kept doing it. I have followers from all over the world, mainly the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom.”
During the COVID pandemic in March 2020, Sanchez was a sophomore at Midland High School. Despite the global shutdown, he focused on his studies online and graduated early by completing high school credits diligently. He ranked in the top 3 percent (#19) of Midland High School's 2022 graduating class.
“Excelling in school has always been important to me,” Sanchez stated. “I quit playing soccer when I was 15 in order to focus on my academics.”
After high school, he enrolled at Midland College where he mostly took online courses while working over 35 hours a week as a grocery rep at H-E-B starting work at 2:00 am each day before heading to the gym after work.
Sanchez is also part of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society and is recognized as a Midland College Honors student which involves completing extra assignments for graduation with an "Honors" designation.
“The more I learn in my business courses, the more I know that this is the right direction for my career,” Sanchez expressed. His ultimate goal is entrepreneurship but initially aims for roles in finance or accounting within an oil and gas company.
He attends Midland College on the Young Professionals in Energy (YPE) Scholarship which helps him maintain no debt while studying.
“One of my goals is to be totally self-sufficient by the time I am 22,” he explained further crediting his single mother for inspiring him throughout life.
Family remains significant for Sanchez who has two older siblings—an automotive mechanic manager brother and a sister planning cosmetology courses at Midland College—and one younger brother aiming for college attendance soon too.
