The City of Midland is taking steps to transform itself into a destination community in West Texas. Progress is ongoing, with several projects set to boost local development and tourism.

A major development is the approval by the Midland City Council for the construction of what will be the largest Costco in Texas. The store will be located northwest of State Highways 191 and 158. This project is expected to attract visitors from across the Permian Basin and stimulate business growth along a new retail corridor.

In terms of athletic facilities, Midland is undergoing significant upgrades. Construction on a baseball complex at Reyes-Mashburn-Nelms Park will conclude this fall, providing new fields for little and junior league tournaments. Additionally, plans for a premier soccer facility at Beal Park are nearly complete. This $36 million project will feature 62 soccer fields among other amenities.

Upgrades are also planned for Hogan Park golf courses, funded through increased user fees rather than taxpayer money. Moreover, a collaboration with the Midland Athletic Syndicate aims to establish a $30-million basketball/volleyball center at Scharbauer Sports Complex, which recently broke ground.

Downtown Midland is also experiencing a resurgence. The Omni Midland Hotel project promises luxury accommodations and dining options, including Bob’s Steak and Chop House. Plans are underway to convert the Thomas building into a boutique hotel, enhancing downtown's capacity for conventions and client services.

New events like Chalk the Block and enhancements to holiday lighting aim to increase downtown engagement. Permanent lighting on Wall Street seeks to improve visibility and walkability, benefiting local businesses.

Midland's efforts reflect its commitment to becoming a regional destination, offering enhanced facilities and attractions for residents and visitors alike.
