Born in Lamesa, Texas, on September 7, 1936, to parents L.I. and Mary Dean, Johny spent his formative years in Lamesa and graduated from Lamesa High School. At the age of twenty-five, Johny enlisted in the United States Army Reserves, where he dedicated himself to the service and achieved the rank of Specialist before receiving an honorable discharge. Notably, he served as a Field Artillery Surveyor and was called to active-duty service during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
Throughout his professional career, Johny worked as an aviation maintenance technician, showcasing his passion for flying and aircraft construction. His mechanical skills extended to metal and woodwork, allowing him to artistically craft airplanes and sailboats, demonstrating his mastery of both mediums.
Johny is preceded in death by his parents L.I. and Mary Dean, his sister, Beverly Jarrett, and his wife Tomi Jane Dean. He is survived by his daughter, Cristy Dean Pyle, and her husband Scott of Midland. He leaves behind grandchildren Derrick Smith, Jacob Millsap of Odessa, Kamarie Carter and husband Will of San Marcos, Jaydan Dean, Jordyn Pyle of Midland, and Casyn Dean and wife Abby of Midland. His great-grandchildren, Josiah, Elijah, Zakai, and future great-grandson Zaramiah, remember him for his adventurous spirit, love for life, family, and his diverse hobbies, from flying and motorcycle riding to canoeing down the Pecos river. Johny was known for his vibrant personality, deep blue eyes, contagious smile, and hearty laughter which illuminated every room he entered.

A visitation will occur on Monday, July 1st, from 5 pm to 7 pm at Lewallen-Garcia-Pipkin Funeral Home and Chapel. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, July 2nd, at 2 pm at the same location, followed by interment at Resthaven Cemetery. Pastor Phil Teaney will officiate the services.
