Midland Independent School District (ISD) revealed the name of its newest elementary school during its school board meeting.

According to a news release from the district, the development of the project was funded by the 2023 Midland ISD School Bond. The new school will be named Lone Star Trails Elementary and will have the nickname Armadillos. The school's colors will be red, white, and blue, reflecting the district's commitment to honoring community input during the bond campaign. The initial plan has the school serving students in Pre-K through 6th grade, transitioning to Pre-K through 5th grade after a grade reconfiguration in 2028.

A committee, in accordance with district policy, was established to determine the school's name, mascot, and logo. According to the news release, the school board nominated members of this committee while teachers were chosen at random to provide feedback through a district-wide email. The name of the school was finalized after three committee meetings last month and community feedback collected via a survey available on various platforms including social media, newsletters, and the MidlandBond2023.com website.

"The naming process was an exciting time," said Morgan Robertson, principal of Lone Star Trails Elementary. "The naming committee had great discussions, and we were able to keep a clear focus on the task to determine the name, mascot and logo for the new elementary." Robertson added that being appointed as principal at Midland ISD’s 40th campus is surreal and that she enjoys new and challenging learning opportunities. "This monumental event of opening a new school does not happen often," she said. "Getting to be a part of it from the ground up has been an amazing experience! I look forward to learning more throughout the year and ensuring Lone Star Trails Elementary and our families have a wonderful opening of school in August of 2025."
