Mayor Lori Blong signing the agreement, finalizing Costco coming to Midland | City of Midland

During a Midland City Council meeting on Aug. 13, council members and the mayor approved an agreement with the Midland Development Corporation and Costco Wholesale Corporation to establish a new Costco facility in Midland. The development is expected to boost the local economy, featuring a 174,000 square-foot store with a $50 million capital investment.

Construction of the Costco is scheduled to begin on or before June 1, 2025, with an anticipated completion date of Aug. 31, 2026. A Costco representative present at the meeting indicated that the store might open as early as 2025 if construction progresses smoothly.

The new Costco will be the largest in Texas, surpassing the average Costco size of 160,000 square feet. The Costco representative also informed the council that the planned store is 20% larger than the company’s average store. The company operates 879 locations throughout the nation.

The Midland Costco is expected to generate 100 full-time equivalent jobs and will cater to an existing base of 6,500 Costco cardholders in the Midland area. Additionally, the store will offer Market Delivery Operations, which will enable delivery of large appliances, such as refrigerators, directly to Midland households.

Although a Costco was planned for Midland in 2020, the deal never materialized. This time, Mayor Blong signed a formal contract with the parties to ensure the project will proceed.
