Midland Memorial Hospital has been awarded the American Heart Association’s 'Get With The Guidelines–Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Center Gold Plus' recognition. The award recognizes the hospital's dedication to providing rapid, research-based care for patients experiencing ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a severe and dangerous type of heart attack.

Approximately 285,000 individuals in the U.S. suffer from STEMI annually, which is caused by a complete blockage in a coronary artery. Forty percent of emergency room visits for acute coronary syndrome result in a STEMI diagnosis, and prompt treatment is essential to restore blood flow quickly.

Recognition as a STEMI Receiving Center spotlights hospitals that offer continuous support for STEMI patients. The facilities coordinate with referring hospitals and emergency medical services to deliver guideline-directed care for both STEMI and non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) cases.

“Effective and timely care is crucial for patients experiencing a STEMI heart attack," said Dr. Abhinav Goyal, an American Heart Association volunteer and professor at Emory School of Medicine. "The American Heart Association’s guidelines call for specific interventions for these patients both in-hospital and post-hospitalization."

The award acknowledges hospitals that adhere to the latest research-based guidelines for treating STEMI as outlined by the American Heart Association.

“MMH is dedicated to improving the quality of heart care,” said Stephen Bowerman, the hospital’s President and CEO. “The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program helps us achieve that goal,” he said.

The hospital also received the American Heart Association’s 'Get With The Guidelines–Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold with Target: Type 2 Diabetes' recognition for its commitment to offering rapid, research-based care for NSTEMI patients.
