In 2023, the Midland Development Corporation (MDC) Board of Directors approved an agreement to expand Midland College’s Transportation Training Program. The funds from MDC were matched by a High Demand Jobs Training Grant through a partnership with Workforce Solutions of the Permian Basin. This expansion included the acquisition of a new Peterbilt truck and 20 scholarships for program participants.
At the June 3, 2024, MDC Board of Directors meeting, members received an update on the program from Midland College and two participants. The newly acquired truck is currently being used by the first class, and over 20 scholarships have been awarded to students.
During the meeting, Andrew Rico Sr. and his son Andrew Rico Jr. shared their experiences with the board. "The impact of this program is not just on our local economy but also on families like ours," they said. Andrew Rico Sr., who completed Midland College’s CDL Training Program in 2010, has built a career in the oil and gas industry as a commercial truck driver. His son, inspired by his father's experience, joined the program this year.
