Midland Health is encouraging community members to “practice a healthier lifestyle” by offering two locations for residents to grow their own fresh produce — the Midland Memorial West Campus Community Garden and the Midland YMCA.
Individuals can rent a plot for $16 per season or $32 for the entire year where they will be provided access to resources such as water and tools. By renting a plot, residents will also be exposed to a network of community members committed to making Midland “the healthiest community in Texas.”
The Midland Health Community Garden was inaugurated in August 2016 and spans approximately 13,000 square feet. It includes 34 individual plots, two keyhole gardens, and three raised planters that are wheelchair-accessible. Individual garden plots measure 5 feet by 13 feet.
Applicants must be residents of Midland County. Individuals who want to participate must submit a completed application, including a signed gardener application and memorandum of understanding, a copy of a Texas driver's license or Texas ID card for each household member, and a copy of a current utility bill or lease agreement with a Midland address. The application fee of $16 or $32 must be paid to the Midland Memorial Foundation.
Master Gardener Classes are available for those holding garden plots. Registration can be completed online at westtexasgardening.org/classes.
