Round Up is a nonprofit organization based in Midland that offers youth sports, education, and community service programs in the Permian Basin. Local young individuals have the opportunity to engage in life skill teachings as well as youth athletics. Founded by John Norman, who is also City of Midland Councilman representing District 2, and his wife Denise Norman, Round Up demonstrates the commitment of the Normans in serving the youth, both on and off the field.
Round Up ties with their youth sports league known as Pow5r Sports League, the premiere youth sports league in the Permian Basin that provides opportunity for local youth to compete on a national level.
What began years ago with two teams has transformed into an entire league that reached 1,700 kids last fall. The Normans laid the foundation for the organization through a life skills curriculum known as the 3 C's – Character Building, Community Outreach, and Building Life and Academic Champions.
"The 3 C's are a platform that we use to introduce these educational values to the students engaged with the organization," said Norman in an interview with Midland Times.
The Character Building component focuses on instilling six fundamental principles: discipline, trust, respect, hard work, integrity, and accountability. These principles form the cornerstone of the organization's mission, encouraging young individuals to integrate these values into all facets of their lives, be it at home, in school, or within the community.
Beyond the playing field, Round Up’s vision extends into the community through its Community Outreach program. This initiative aims to influence the local community positively and foster partnerships with community services, including collaboration with nonprofits and local businesses.
"When it comes to community outreach, we want to help these young individuals create a sense of ownership within their community and be better individuals overall," said Norman.
Round Up holds a commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals, extending to the academic realm through the Building Life and Academic Champions component. Weekly teachings of life skills spanning communication, job preparation, college readiness, financial literacy, and technology understanding are offered over a six-week period. Enrolled students also benefit from tutoring services provided by staff and volunteers.
"We believe the foundation for a successful life for these young kids is the utilization of all three values that we promote," Norman said.
According to Norman, Round Up isn't just about youth sports; it's a journey designed to equip young individuals with essential life skills and values, setting them on a path toward fulfilling and productive lives.
