Childbirth Educator Lorie Prieto teaching at the Infant/Child Safety class | DaLeesa Brown

Midland Health is taking steps to ensure the safety and well-being of infants and children through its monthly Infant/Child Safety class. The course, facilitated by childbirth educator Lorie Prieto, covers aspects such as car seat safety, home safety, sleep safety, emergency preparedness, and childproofing homes.

The two-hour-long Infant/Child Safety class distinguishes itself with its discussion-based approach, offering a platform for parents and caregivers to delve into pertinent safety topics. While other classes at Midland Health often blend discussion with hands-on activities, the Infant/Child Safety course focuses on fostering understanding and awareness.

Prieto, who brings her expertise as a childbirth educator to the classes, emphasizes the coverage of safety measures from the newborn to toddler stages. Attendees, whether individuals or couples, receive informative packets and are encouraged to take notes as Prieto imparts valuable knowledge.

When questioned about prevalent safety concerns or risks that may not be apparent to parents or caregivers before attending the class, she said, “Parents tend to be shocked about toy safety.” Prieto goes on to say, “Older toys usually have toxic lead paint, and toys that have batteries or magnets in them are choking hazards. A lot of parents think, ‘Wow, I didn't realize that was a risk for my baby to play with,' after they are reminded of such toys.”

As children grow, the course extends its coverage to childproofing homes, addressing safety concerns as toddlers start to explore and navigate their surroundings.

Prieto underlines the importance of infant and child safety education, stating, “Education is always a need, especially when it comes to children. Information and protocols tend to change within healthcare and safety concerns, so it's important to stay educated on those things.”

Acknowledging that many new parents may not be fully aware of potential risks, Prieto emphasizes that the class caters to a diverse audience, ranging from first-time parents to seasoned caregivers. It serves as a resource, offering practical insights to enhance child safety.

In addition to the Infant/Child Safety class, Midland Health provides a range of other classes, including Childbirth (part 1, 2, and 3), Baby Care, and Breastfeeding. For those unable to attend in person, online classes such as Understanding Birth, Understanding Your Newborn, and Understanding Breastfeeding are available at varying prices.
