Mustangs secure district title and beat Fort Worth Christian 49-44

The Midland Christian boys’ basketball team (27-6, 6-0) knocked off Fort Worth Christian (20-13, 3-3) by a score of 49-44 on Feb. 2, and the Mustangs have secured the TAPPS 1-5A District title.

Midland Christian went up 5-0 to start the game, highlighted by a deep three for Zach Day from at least six feet beyond the arc. The catch and shoot play was set up by Brody McHugh’s assist, who had previously come away with a steal.

In the second quarter it was a 15-14 Fort Worth Christian lead, but Day launched another three to go up by two.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the third quarter with Day drilling another long ball to go up 27-23. He struck again from deep to put the Mustangs up 33-28.

In the fourth quarter it was a one point game at 40-39, but McHugh got in on the three point action to make it a 43-39 lead for the Mustangs. They were able to hold on the rest of the way for the district win.

The Mustangs were lights out shooting the ball at 57%, 56% from three and 75% from the free throw line. Each team had 16 rebounds in the game. In the win, Andrew Fox moved into fifth in school history with 358 assists.
