In the wake of the passing of Councilman Dan Corrales, the City of Midland is navigating the process to fill the vacant at-large seat on the Midland City Council. Here are key details about the city's efforts:
The individual who will assume the at-large seat will be determined through a direct voting process rather than an appointment, as stated in the City of Midland news release.
The City Attorney’s Office is currently conducting a review of local and state guidelines. This examination ensures that the city's next steps align with both the state constitution and the city charter.
According to the news release, the City of Midland is ensuring all necessary details are addressed to fill the open council seat, stating they want to have “‘i’s’ dotted and ‘t’s’ crossed as [they] fill the open seat on the council.” The release goes on to state, “there is no scenario where the people won’t vote for the person to fill the open seat on the council.”
Council vacancies are not unfamiliar territory for Midland. Over the past couple of decades, there have been instances of such vacancies, providing the city with past experiences to draw upon.
According to the release, the city is providing an update at one time with the goal of preventing unnecessary speculation. The city plans to deliver a detailed update on the matter following the Midland City Council meeting scheduled for Feb. 13.
