In an debut at the UIL Mariachi Festival in El Paso last weekend, the Legacy High School mariachi band, known as Mariachi Revolución, achieved a perfect score of "1" from every judge during their performance on Saturday, Jan. 27.
The Regional Mariachi competition featured musical ensembles from 27 schools across West Texas. Mariachi Revolución is in its inaugural year, having launched the mariachi program in 2021. Under the guidance of the new director, Zach Machuca, the varsity program at Legacy High School began just last fall with an enrollment of six students. Since its inception, the class's popularity has increased, and a total of 19 student musicians contributed to the winning performance.
"I am immensely proud of the dedication and talent displayed by our students," said Machuca. "Achieving a perfect score in our first year of competition is a testament to their commitment and enthusiasm."
Mariachi Revolución is set to advance to the State Festival in Seguin, Texas, scheduled for Feb. 23-25. They will compete against other top high school mariachi bands from across the state.
According to the news release from Midland ISD, the "Midland ISD community anticipates continued growth and recognition for the mariachi program" as they prepare for the State Festival.
