On Friday, Jan. 26, City of Midland officials took a different approach to community service, stepping out of City Hall and into the Midland Soup Kitchen. City Manager Tommy Gonzalez, Chief of Staff Taylor Novak, City Councilman John Norman, and City Councilwoman Amy Stretcher Burkes joined at Midland Soup Kitchen to serve over 130 patrons. Captured in photos on the Midland Soup Kitchen Facebook post, city officials are pictured serving food and beverages to those present.
The Midland Soup Kitchen, a non-profit organization with a mission to aid the less fortunate members of the community, focuses on supporting the elderly, unemployed, underemployed, poor, migrants, and the homeless, including women, men, and children.
Expressing gratitude for the officials' involvement, a Facebook post from the Midland Soup Kitchen stated, “To our city leaders, we appreciate every single one of you for taking the time to volunteer with us today. We can’t wait to have you back!”
According to their website, the Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry serves an average of 150 home-cooked meals daily and provides spiritual nourishment through preaching. The organization also engages in activities such as sharing the Gospel daily, organizing holiday meals and gifts during Christmas, hosting vacation Bible School, offering resources for shelter and education, distributing Bibles to those interested, and maintaining a no-questions-asked clothing table.
