Winter watering for Midland, Texas | Keep Midland Beautiful

Keep Midland Beautiful (KMB) is encouraging winter watering by offering free water conservation kits for residents at their office located at 3500 N A St Ste 1500.

According to a KMB press release, watering in the winter is essential for plant health, particularly in areas like West Texas with dry air, low precipitation, and high winds.

Midland is currently facing moderate drought conditions and KMB emphasizes the importance of watering trees, shrubs, lawns, and perennials during prolonged dry winter periods to prevent root damage.

As stated in the press release, established large trees that have root spreads equal to or greater than their height require water applied to the critical root zone within the dripline. Young trees under two years old benefit from weekly watering, while a layer of mulch protects roots and prevents cold damage. Extended dry periods in winter can harm plant root systems, leading to weakened plants susceptible to issues like insect infestations. Woody plants with shallow roots need supplemental watering and benefit from mulching to conserve soil moisture, according to the press release.

Herb type perennials and ground covers in exposed sites are vulnerable to winter freezing and thawing, mitigated by 3 to 4 inches of mulch and reduced winter watering. Lawns, especially newly established ones, are prone to winter damage, requiring monthly watering during dry winters. In addition, newly planted trees and shrubs demand careful attention where those trees require slow-soaking water to a depth of 12 inches under the dripline, as stated by the press release.

KMB’s mission is educating and inspiring the community for a clean, beautiful, and waste-free Midland. For further information, visit www.keepmidlandbeautiful.org.
