Midland Legacy topples Midland 49-31 on four touchdown game by Davila

Midland Legacy (7-2, 3-1) senior quarterback Marcos Davila was on top of his game in a huge game against rival Midland (8-1, 3-1), scoring four touchdowns in a 49-31 win over the Bulldogs who were undefeated heading into the game.

Legacy led 7-0 but Stroman Bridges tied up the game for Midland on an 80-yard touchdown run and Levi Crowder kick. The Rebels responded on a touchdown run of six yards to make it a 14-7 game after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored back-to-back touchdowns to go up 21-14. Tristan Love ran it in from seven-yards and Jake Nava tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Kolb, with Crowder making both kicks. The Rebels tied the game in a 37-yard touchdown pass by Davila, but Crowder hit a 26-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 24-21 lead after two.

In the third quarter the Rebels woke up with three touchdowns to take a 42-31 lead. McCoy had a seven-yard touchdown for Midland and Crowder’s extra point was good. Davila tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring and secure the win.

Davila was 21-for-32 for 392 yards and three touchdowns in the air. He also had four yards rushing including a touchdown. Tommy Johnson III led the rushing attack with 18 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown. Damien Johnson ran 16 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

Aiden Serrano was the number one receiver with nine catches for 134 yards and a touchdown. Brex Stevens caught four passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, while Skylar Wilburn had two receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Williams caught three passes for 51 yards.

The Rebel defense was led by Esus Robledo’s 11 tackles, with one for a loss. Drew Nisius added nine tackles in the win. Colin Brazzel picked off a pass, Max Vera recovered a fumble and Robledo and Izack Villasenor each caused a fumble.

Jason Maltos was 7-for-7 in extra points and had eight kickoffs for 390 yards including two touchbacks. Serrano had a kickoff return for 20 yards and Cole Neatherlin returned a punt for 15 yards.

For Midland, Stroman Bridges had 13 attempts for 120 yards and a touchdown that went for 80 yards. Elijah McCoy carried the ball 18 times for 112 yards and a touchdown. Tristan Love had 10 yards rushing on nine carries with a touchdown. Jake Nava had a touchdown pass of 28 yards to Anthony Kolb.

Midland Legacy had a 597-282 yard advantage and held the Bulldogs to only 28 yards on the ground. The Rebels had a 30-11 first down advantage and were 11-for-15 on third quarter efficiency, with the Bulldogs at only 1-for-20. Midland Legacy made both of their fourth down conversions and Midland Legacy was 2-for-3. Midland Legacy lost three fumbles in the game, while Midland turned the ball over twice on a fumble and an interception.

Both teams are now tied for the 6A region 1 District 2 lead going into the final game of the season. Next for Midland is a home matchup with Permian (5-4, 2-2) on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. Midland Legacy travels to Odessa (5-4, 2-2) on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
