Midland and Midland Legacy swimmers set meet and school records at Midland Invitational

On Oct. 14 the Midland High School swim and diving team hosted the Midland Invitational with 14 teams from El Paso and West Texas competing for team titles. Midland Hugh’s Hannah Krueger and the Midland Legacy boys’ relay team won their respective races (100 yard freestyle and 200 yard medley), setting meet and school records. The girls’ diving meet had Midland’s Kylee Cruce, Sydney Leonard and Aubree Cruce taking the top three spots.

Swim meet

The boys’ meet was won by San Angelo Central, who beat out Midland Legacy by two points (618-616). Permian place sixth with 162 points, Midland placed seventh with 141 points, Midland Christian was eighth with 87 points and Odessa was ninth with 69 points.

The girls’ meet was won by San Angelo Central with 894 points. Midland Legacy was third with 441 points, Midland placed fourth with 345 points, Permian was seventh with 103 points, Odessa was 10th with 44 points and Midland Christian placed 11th with 37 points.

Midland’s Krueger, who was a state qualifier last season, set a new meet record in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 52.73. 

The Midland Legacy boys’ relay team (Gavin Rochelle, David Fuentes, Brendan Morgan, Cooper Workman) set a new record in the 200 yard medley with a time of 1:39.79 and the 200 yard freestyle at 1:30.07. These are also school records.

In the 200 yard girls’ relay race Midland was second with a time of 1:55.37 and Midland Legacy placed third with a time of 1:59.46.

In the girls’ 200 yard freestyle race, Lainey Gloden of Midland Legacy took first with a time of 2:02.03

In the boys’ 200 yard freestyle race, the top local athlete was Brendan Morgan of Midland Legacy with a time of 2:02.59 for fifth.

In the girls’ 200 yard individual medley race, Midland Legacy’s Lauren Chandler and Elizebeth Bitnerowska placed first and second with times of 2:21.68 and 2:23.41. Charlotte Erickson of Midland was third at 2:27.64.

In the boys’ 200 yard individual medley race, Eli Bridges of Midland Christian was first with a meet record time of 2:01.57. Midland Legacy’s Gavin Rochelle was second with a time of 2:01.60.

In the girls’ 50 yard freestyle, the top local athlete was Cora Retzer of Midland with a time of 26.63.

In the boys’ 50 yard freestyle, Midland Legacy’s David Fuentes and David Sites were first and second with times of 22.79 and 23.14.

In the girls’ 100 yard butterfly, Brianna Ortiz of Midland Legacy was third with a time of 1:03.44.

In the boys’ 100 yard butterfly, Bridges of Midland Christian was first with a time of 54.44.

In the girls’ 100 yard freestyle race, Hannah Krueger was first with a meet record time of 52.73.

In the boys’ 100 yard freestyle race, Luis Villalobos-Matson was second with a time of 49.37.

In the girls’ 500 yard freestyle race, Lauren Chandler was first with a time of 5:44.47.

In the boys’ 500 yard freestyle race, David Sites of Midland Legacy was second with a time of 5:04.53; Oscar Buitrago was third with a time of 5:04.64 and Stephan Sites was fourth with a time of 5:30.43.

In the girls’ 200 yard freestyle relay, Midland won with a time of 1:45.23.

In the boys’ 200 yard freestyle relay, Midland Legacy won with a meet record time of 1:30.07.

In the girls’ 100 yard backstroke, Midland Legacy’s Lainey Gloden won 59.78.

In the boys’ 100 yard backstroke, George Workman of Midland Legacy was the top local athlete with a fourth place time of 56.99.

In the girls’ 100 yard breastroke, Midland’s Krueger and Charlotte Erickson were second and third with times of 1:10.57 and 1:12.36.

In the boys’ 100 yard breaststroke, Gavin Rochelle of Midland Legacy won with a time of 1:03.89 and Villalobos-Matson of Midland Legacy was second with a time of 1:05.29.

In the girls’ 400 yard freestyle relay, Midland Legacy was second with a time of 3:49.61. 

In the boys’ 400 yard freestyle relay, Midland Legacy placed second with a time of 3:41.46.

Diving

San Angelo Central won the women’s diving competition with a score of 402. Midland Legacy was third at 202 point, Midland was fourth at 173 points, Permian was eight at 22 points and Odessa had five points for 12th.

The men’s competition was won by Midland Legacy with 263 points. Permian was sixth at 67 points, Midland was seventh at 65 points, Odessa was eighth at 35 points and Midland Christian School was 10th at 24 points.

In the girls’ 1 meter diving, Midland had the top three with Kylee Cruce first (177.50), Sydney Leonard second (175.55) and Aubree Cruce third (168.00).

In the boys’ 1 meter diving, Damian Hernandez of Midland Legacy was third with a score of 98.55 and Shane Hart of Midland Legacy placed fourth with a score of 79.20.
