Midland Christian (2-5, 0-2) had their hands full on Friday with undefeated Liberty Christian (7-0, 2-0), as the Mustangs weren’t able to stop the Warriors and couldn’t get their own offense going in a 46-0 district loss.
The Warriors went up 7-0 in the first quarter on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Cole Welliver to Quinton Brown. Brown took a quick screen pass and put on the burners, sprinting down the sideline for a score. In the second quarter Chase Garnett scored twice, both on three-yard runs to make it 21-0. They added a 21-yard field goal to go up 24-0 at the half.
In the third quarter Welliver hit Brown again for a 22-yard touchdown pass. Welliver threw his third touchdown pass, this time for 49-yards to Jaylon Hawkins to put the Warriors up 39-0 after a two point conversion. Garnett capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter for his third touchdown of the day on an eight-yard run.
The Warriors tallied 253 passing yards and 114 rushing yards as a team, while holding Midland Christian to 139 yards in the air and 88 rushing yards for a total of 227 yards. The Warriors did not have a turnover while the Mustangs had three on two fumbles and an interception.
Welliver ended with 256 yards on 14-for-22 passing, with three scores. Garnett had 21 carries for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Brown caught three passes, two for touchdowns, with 114 yards.
Mustang quarterback Colten Newsom was 14-for-19 for 139 yards in the air. A highlight was a flea flicker in the first quarter where he pitched to Brylee Perez, then received a pitch back and tossed a dime to Colten Alexander in stride.
This was the second straight loss for the Warriors, who have two games left against district foes.
