H.S. Football: Bronchos rally, beat Panthers in shoot-out; First Odessa win over Permian since 2013.

Junior quarterback Mikey Cota threw for 404 yards and five touchdowns and the Odessa Bronchos rallied from a halftime deficit to beat the Permian Panthers, 49-42, at Ratliff Stadium, before a crowd of more than 5,000.

It was the first win for Odessa (4-1) over Permian (3-3) since 2013, when the Bronchos won, 31-28.

Cota connected for touchdowns twice with sophomore Andrew Rodriguez (six catches, 157 yards) and twice with University of Oklahoma-bound senior Ivan Carreon (four catches, 94 yards).

Defensively, senior defensive backs Zayne Minjarez (13 tackles) and Jayven Gonzales (eight tackles) and junior DT Tony Romo (seven tackles) paced Odessa.

Juzstyce Lara again led Permian offensively with 22 carries for 250 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bronchos gained just 87 yards on the ground. Senior running back Dejuan Green had 16 carries for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Odessa opened the scoring on their first series of the game with an 80 yard touchdown pass from Cota to Rodriguez, with 11 minutes still remaining in the first quarter.

The Panthers would tie the game on an eight yard pass from Jakob Garcia (5 of 7 for 104 yards, three touchdowns) to tight end Isaiah Welton, then took the lead with a 44 yard, fourth down strike to Gage Murphy that gave Permian a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Lara would extend the Panthers' lead, one minute into the second quarter, scoring from 28 yards out, to make the score 21-7.

Then the Bronchos' Green would counter with a rushing score of his own to make it 21-14.

The teams exchanged passing touchdowns, with Garcia finding Luke Paradeaux for a 12 yard score to make it 28-14, Panthers, then Cota finding Rodriguez again, this time for 27 yards, to make it 28-21 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Panthers extended their lead to 35-21 one minute into the fourth, when Garcia connected with Murphy on a 32 yard score. Then Cota struck back, finding Carreon for a 69 yard score on the following possession to make it 35-27, then Carreon again with six minutes remaining to tie the game, 35-35.

Two minutes later, Lara would gave Permian its last lead of the game, scoring from 48 yards out to make it 42-35. But Odessa would score twice in the final four minutes of the game to tie it and take the lead for good on a five yard touchdown run by Green with less than a minute remaining.
