The Aphasia Center of West Texas (ACWTX) will host a tribute concert fundraiser featuring Yacht Rock classics and Bon Jovi anthems on Saturday, April 26.
The event, held at Casa de Windswept in Gardendale from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., will feature a two-part performance by a tribute band skilled in both genres, with all proceeds benefiting the center’s programs for individuals with aphasia.
“Since 2010, we’ve been hosting a concert as one of our fundraisers, and for the past several years, we have brought in tribute bands that are fun and attract all ages,” said Rebecca Bell, marketing director for ACWTX. “We heard about the Bon Jovi tribute and thought it would be a lot of fun. It just so happens that the band we chose also performs Yacht Rock, so the first half of the concert will be Yacht Rock, and the second half will be a Bon Jovi tribute.”
All proceeds from the event will benefit ACWTX’s programs for individuals with aphasia, a communication disorder often caused by stroke, brain disease, or injury. The center’s offerings include conversation groups, gardening, cooking with aphasia-friendly recipes, woodworking, and music, among others.
“Aphasia is chronic, meaning once a person acquires it, they have it for life,” Bell said. “Our goal is to help people overcome communication barriers so they do not feel isolated. Thanks to this fundraiser, we can continue to ensure that all money stays in West Texas and directly benefits our programs.”
Attendees can enjoy a catered buffet, a hosted beer and wine bar, and receive event t-shirts. Casa de Windswept offers an intimate outdoor atmosphere just 18 minutes from Midland. Party favors, including sunglasses, light sticks, captain’s hats, and leis, will add to the festive ambiance.
The event’s success is made possible by generous community sponsorships, including support from the oil and gas industry, local businesses, and individual donors.
“Because of community support and donations, we can offer our services at a low monthly rate and provide scholarships to many of our members,” Bell said.
For those unable to attend, there are multiple ways to contribute. The center hosts quarterly Talk N Tour events, offering the public an inside look at its mission.
The next event is scheduled for May 29 at 5:15 p.m. Donations can also be made online at acwtx.org, with options to join the Speak Up! Sustainers Circle for monthly contributions or make one-time gifts in honor or memory of a loved one.
