The Midland Run Crew’s 6 Before 6 is helping local runners build fitness and community by offering a challenging early morning run that starts at 5:45 a.m. every Thursday. Participants meet in the parking lot of Stonegate Fellowship Church to run six miles before most people even start their day.

The name 6 Before 6 serves as a catchy reminder of the goal: running six miles before 6 a.m.

“Everyone loves a theme, and it was a catchy one to let everyone know we run six miles before 6 a.m.,” said Midland Run Crew founder Robert Gomez. “At an average of a 10-minute pace, you can achieve it.”

Midland Run Crew, known for making fitness fun and inclusive, sees 6 Before 6 as a way to stay consistent and keep runners engaged.

“It allows us to be fun, stay consistent, and communicate what is being offered so our runners know they have options,” Gomez said.

Runners meet at the Stonegate Fellowship Church parking lot, where the flagship 6-mile route begins and ends. Keeping a set course allows participants to track their progress while knowing they will always have someone to run with. For those looking for a shorter distance, a 3-mile option is also available.

“Walkers and joggers are encouraged to join and always welcomed,” Gomez emphasized.

Participation has grown steadily, with runners now expecting and looking forward to the early morning event.

“On any given day, it can range from two people to 20 people, especially as the weather begins to warm up,” Gomez said. “The growth has increased over time due to the fact that we are consistent and all-inclusive of any pace at any fitness level.”

For newcomers who may be hesitant to start running so early, Gomez offered some advice.

“We would suggest wearing bright-colored clothes, having a headlamp or light-up running vest for visibility, and getting into a rhythm of waking up early each day—it will become easier to join,” he said. “Show up 10 to 15 minutes ahead of time if you have any questions and to warm up.”

The success of 6 Before 6 has led to an expansion into Odessa, where runners now meet at Mission Fitness. In addition to the Thursday morning runs, the Midland Run Crew offers other themed events, including Track Tuesdays and Saturday Social 5K pop-up runs.

For those looking to build fitness in a supportive environment, 6 Before 6 provides an opportunity to hit the pavement and connect with others—before most of the city even wakes up.
