Midland Independent School District (MISD) seniors have the opportunity to enroll in a new welding course this summer.
According to a news release, the class is free for MISD students and offers hands-on welding training. It provides dual credit and contributes to Grade Point Average (GPA) credit. There are no prerequisites for the course, which aims to attract students interested in pursuing a welding certification. To qualify, students must be rising MISD seniors who are not currently enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE) dual credit courses.
The curriculum will focus on technical skills required for high-paying, in-demand careers in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy. The news release states that welding is a skilled trade in demand in West Texas and essential to the area's growth. MISD aims to facilitate workforce development in this vital field for the city. The class will run from June 2 to July 8, with 24 seats available.
"This program is an excellent opportunity for students who may not have been part of a CTE dual credit program but are now considering a hands-on career with strong job prospects," said CTE Executive Director Jeff Horner. "By investing in workforce training while still in high school, students can graduate with valuable skills that put them ahead in the job market," Horner added.
