The Sword School is offering couples a unique way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with its Sweetheart Sword Fight, a three-hour class on February 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to learn medieval longsword combat and choreograph their own romantic duel, combining adventure and teamwork for an unforgettable experience.
“We are always imagining fun ways for people to engage with our classes,” said Skye Hilton, owner of The Sword School. “Sword fights have always been a staple in tales of adventure and swashbuckling. The lover’s duel—where the protagonist and their love interest fight—is almost always the highlight in any story.”
Hilton cited examples such as Zorro and Elena or Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws, adding that the event offers couples a chance to create their own cinematic moment while learning a new skill.
The class is structured in two parts. The first half focuses on training with the medieval longsword, a two-handed weapon about 50 inches long and weighing approximately three pounds.
“Our instruction is based on medieval manuscripts written by sword masters of the era,” Hilton explained. Couples will learn key techniques such as footwork, posture, guards, and cuts using wooden swords designed for safety.
After mastering the basics, couples will move on to designing their own choreographed fight sequence. Instructors will demonstrate both realistic and theatrical swordplay, encouraging participants to consider the storytelling aspect of their duel.
“Choreographed fights are used in stories to build tension, resolve conflicts or even for comedy,” Hilton said. “We encourage participants to think about why they are fighting. Should it be serious or comedic? Romantic or filled with rivalry?”
The event is designed to be both fun and safe. Hilton assured that The Sword School’s instructors have more than a decade of experience training newcomers.
“All participants receive guidance on how to handle the weapons safely, wear protective gear, and start with slow, controlled movements,” she said. “When your movements are smooth and controlled, speed happens naturally.”
Since its debut in 2024, the Sweetheart Sword Fight has been a hit, leading to an additional weekend session to meet demand.
“Participants enjoyed building their fights, and there was a lot of laughter and smiles throughout the class,” Hilton said.
For couples looking to make the most of their experience, Hilton has one piece of advice: “Be prepared to use your imagination, play and experiment. Step away from the mundane and be the knight, princess, pirate or warrior you’ve always dreamed of being.”
Admission for the event is $60 per couple, and all equipment is provided. Newcomers are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes early for registration.
