The Arts Council of Midland (ACM) is preparing to host its latest installment of Conversations in Fine Art, featuring J.P. "Pat" McDaniel of the Haley Memorial Library and History Center. The free event will give attendees the chance to explore the region’s Western heritage and history through McDaniel’s extensive knowledge and personal experiences.
McDaniel, who has worked at the Haley Library for more than three decades, brings a wealth of insight into the historical and cultural significance of the Southwest. His deep-rooted connections to the Midland community, including lifelong friendships with Evelyn Scarborough Linebery and Tom Linebery, make him an ideal guest for the series.
“Pat McDaniel seemed a perfect fit for Conversations in Fine Art because of his long-standing relationship with the arts through his work at the Haley Library,” ACM Executive Director Daniel Holeva said. “His firsthand experiences and personal anecdotes will help connect the dots between Midland’s history and the fine arts community.”
During the discussion, McDaniel will highlight the Haley Library’s mission of preserving Western heritage and history while sharing stories of early pioneers who helped shape Midland and beyond.
Holeva said attendees can expect to leave with a deeper appreciation for the legacies of the Southwest’s founders.
“Through conversation, we can expect to hear engaging stories about the individuals who explored, settled and built this region,” Holeva said. “It’s an opportunity to reflect on how our past informs our present and future.”
The Conversations in Fine Art series has evolved over time, featuring speakers from the arts and related fields. While the focus is often on artists, the inclusion of experts like McDaniel highlights the broader cultural and historical context that shapes the creative landscape.
“Sometimes arts-adjacent individuals bring the liveliest discussions,” Holeva said. “Audience participation plays a big role, and we always encourage attendees to ask questions and interact with our guests.”
Following McDaniel’s discussion, ACM will welcome floral designer Elizabeth Resch of Velvet Mesquite Designs for the next installment.
Later in the year, the series will feature jeweler Randy Bryant and Austin-based artist and muralist Ryan Runcie, whose visit will include workshops for high school students and adults.
