The Bush Family Home State Historic Site will host an interactive Presidents Day event on Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children dressed as former presidents and first ladies will bring history to life in a human wax museum, offering visitors a chance to learn about U.S. history in an engaging way.

This event provides families with the opportunity to learn about the men who have served as president, while interacting with young historians who have researched and portrayed their chosen leaders.

In addition to the wax museum, visitors can participate in a log cabin craft activity and explore a special exhibit comparing the heights of U.S. presidents.

Self-guided tours of the Bush Family Home will also be available for free throughout the day.

“We wanted an event that kids could participate in,” said Site Manager Troy Gray. “We thought it would be a great idea for them to research and learn about a president, then be able to share that knowledge with others.”

Children interested in participating in the wax museum can have their parents sign them up at the Bush Family Home or request a sign-up sheet via email at bushfamilyhome@thc.texas.gov.

Two time slots are available: 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The site encourages early sign-ups to ensure that no two children portray the same historical figure during a time slot.

“We left the choice of presidents and first ladies up to the kids,” Gray said. “There are plenty of options.”

While families are responsible for finding appropriate costumes, site staff can provide research assistance to help children prepare. If a child has difficulty finding information, staff members will offer key facts and talking points to help them present their character.

The Bush Family Home plans to document the event with photos and a summary to share online, ensuring those unable to attend can still experience the celebration.

“We held a Presidents Day event last year, but we hope to make this an annual tradition that honors all the presidents,” Gray said.

The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is located at 1412 West Ohio St. in Midland. Regular operating hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tour beginning at 4:15 p.m. More information is available at visitbushfamilyhome.com.
