The Palette Club of Midland is inviting the public to a free demonstration on stretching canvases, led by local artist Rebekah Condor. The event will take place Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Palette Club’s facility, continuing its long-standing tradition of providing monthly educational opportunities for art enthusiasts.
“Our goal is to expose the community to all different aspects of the art world,” said Palette Club President Sherry Thomas. “We want to educate attendees on how to continue what they experience in the demo on their own if they’re interested.”
The Palette Club hosts free demonstrations on the second Tuesday of each month during the school year, except for December. This month’s session marks the first time the club has featured a demonstration on canvas stretching. Previous topics have included painting in various mediums, glassblowing, silversmithing, and stained glass.
Rebekah Condor brings a unique perspective to the event, drawing from her extensive background in art. She began painting during the COVID-19 pandemic and apprenticed under a professional artist in the Permian Basin. Condor later earned a fine art degree from Abilene Christian University in 2022 and has been painting professionally ever since.
“Much of my work focuses on the landscapes of the Southwest,” Condor said. “Stretching my own Belgian linen canvases allows me to honor traditional methods while creating pieces that capture the beauty of our region.”
Attendees will learn the essential materials and techniques needed to stretch their own canvases, with Condor available to answer questions throughout the session.
While this demonstration will primarily be instructional, the Palette Club encourages participants to replicate what they learn at home.
Thomas emphasized that these monthly events are part of the club’s commitment to fostering community engagement with the arts.
“These demonstrations spark conversations with those who may be new to our club,” she said. “It’s always exciting to share that we’ve been in Midland since the 1920s and offer year-round opportunities for artists of all levels.”
No registration is required for the demonstration—guests can simply show up and enjoy the session. To learn more about future events, visit the Palette Club’s website or follow their social media channels.
