Congressman August Pfluger, representing Texas's 11th district and serving as Chairman of the U.S. House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence, conducted a hearing to assess the threats posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS), commonly known as drones. The hearing took place in Washington, D.C., against the backdrop of several unexplained drone sightings reported in New Jersey and New York.
Pfluger emphasized the potential risks associated with drone technology. "The recent drone sightings in New Jersey are alarming and concerning," he stated. He highlighted that drones could be used to undermine national security and disrupt critical infrastructure if they fall into the wrong hands. Pfluger stressed the importance of securing U.S. airspace from unauthorized aerial systems and protecting the homeland from foreign adversaries.
