Vernon Dee Stokes, Longtime Educator, Passes Away at 85

Vernon Dee Stokes, aged 85, of Midland, passed away on September 14, 2024, and was reunited with his daughters in the presence of his Savior. He was born on January 1, 1939, in Arch, New Mexico, to Scott Smith Stokes and Alma Rachel Copeland Stokes.

A dedicated public educator for 40 years, Vernon started his career as a teacher and coach, later becoming a high school administrator. He held a Master's Degree and a doctorate in Education, working at various educational institutions in administrative roles. Additionally, Vernon served as a leader in Baptist churches, volunteering with music, teaching Sunday school, and participating in various church committees.

Survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Vernon Stokes was remembered for his commitment to family, faith, and education. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, at First Baptist Church, with a visitation on Thursday, September 19 at the residence of Shane and Kim Stokes.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The First Baptist Church Ezekiel Department Benevolence Fund, InStep Ministry, or the Stokes Endowed Scholarships at Wayland Baptist University.
