Midland Independent School District (ISD) is advising the public not to be alarmed if they hear noises coming from Midland High School over the next two weeks. The district stated in a Facebook post that they will be conducting safety drills, and there will be sounds coming from the school that are akin to realistic gunfire.
"Midland ISD Police will conduct several law enforcement training exercises at Midland High School over the next two weeks. These are safety drills with other agencies that will involve realistic sounds of gunfire and armed officers on the campus with weapons. The training exercises will take place July 24-25 and July 30-31. MISD is informing the public ahead of time to alleviate any concerns that may arise during the event," said Brent D Mccullough, Midland ISD, according to Facebook.
According to Midland ISD’s website, the Board of Trustees established the police department in 1989, employing fully authorized peace officers in accordance with the Texas Education Code. The district police officers' chief concern is to account for the well-being of everyone who attends or works on district campuses, along with assisting campus administrators with safety and security concerns as needed. The chief of police leads the district police department and reports to Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Howard.

"In addition to school district police officers physically policing Midland ISD campuses, the district also incorporates electronic access control features at all facilities, as well as camera surveillance technology," the district says. "These devices are specifically focused in a manner that maximizes their capability of controlling access to campuses, while also visually monitoring what goes on at them."
In an effort to maintain drug-free campuses, according to the MISD website, the police department employs a school district officer with a K-9 drug dog to cultivate rich learning environments across district buildings.
