Mustangs come back to beat Fort Worth Christian in women's hoops

Midland Christian overcame a halftime deficit to beat Fort Worth Christian. | Midland Christian women's basketball

Midland Christian (16-13, 1-5) trailed at halftime, but outscored Fort Worth Christian (14-21, 2-5) by 13 points in the second half to come back and take a 46-40 district road win on Feb. 2.

Fort Worth Christian started the game off on a 4-0 run and were looking to make it three straight buckets, but Selah Fox thought otherwise and blocked a layup. The Cardinals got possession back and did add a basket, but on the next Fort Worth Christian possession, Midland Christian’s Addi Tatsch had a block of her own. Fort Worth Christian had an 11-7 lead after one quarter.

The Cardinals led 14-9 in the second quarter, and while they were trying to extend the lead, Mallory West blocked a shot near the hoop for Midland Christian. The Cardinals tacked on a basket, but Haleigh Cook of the Mustangs responded with a three to make it a 16-12 game in favor of Fort Christian. Amara Odukwu got her hand for a steal that led to a fast break score later in the quarter to make it a 22-17 game, with the Cardinals leading. It was a 24-17 lead in favor of Fort Christian at halftime.

It was a whole other story in the second half, as the Mustangs came out with a vengeance. In the third quarter, McKenzie Ramirez tied up the game 26-26 with a three from the corner, and then Cook hit a three to put the Mustangs up by three. They ended up on an 11-0 run capped off by a fast break layup by Cook to make it a 34-26 lead for Midland Christian. Midland Christian had a 34-31 lead and Selah Fox helped secure that lead with a blocked shot. Cook drilled a three to make it a 39-32 lead for the Mustangs moments later. The game was tight right to the end, however. Up 39-38, Ramirez gave the Mustangs a four point lead when she hit a shot from downtown. They were able to hold on the rest of the way to take the win.

Midland Christian shot 41% and 38% from three, while holding the Cardinals to 35% and 33% respectively. They had advantages in assists (14-13), steals (12-8) and blocks (5-3). Fort Worth Christian led 35-21 in boards.
