U.S. Representative August Pfluger (R-San Angelo) paid tribute to the late Permian Basin oilman and philanthropist Jim Henry on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Henry passed away on October 17 at the age of 89.
Pfluger praised Henry for his pioneering work in the Permian Basin oil fields and specifically in the Wolfberry Play, which laid the groundwork for the shale revolution that revitalized the entire region. In a press release issued by his office on October 27, Pfluger said, “His dedication, expertise, and tireless efforts transformed not only the industry but the lives of countless families throughout America and beyond.”
Henry, a 1958 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a master's degree in petroleum engineering, was a well-known figure in the oil sector. According to a report from Odessa NBC affiliate KWES news, he made significant contributions to the industry.
Pfluger also highlighted Henry's philanthropy and his understanding of the importance of giving back to the Midland community that had supported him. The congressman described Henry as a "sweet man and a legend" and offered his condolences and prayers to his family and loved ones.
A memorial service for Henry was held at the First Methodist Church in Midland on October 23, as reported by KWES.
Jim Henry's legacy as an innovative oilman, philanthropist, and community supporter will be remembered by those whose lives he touched. His contributions to the Permian Basin and the oil industry as a whole will continue to have a lasting impact.
