St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Midland celebrated the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi by holding its blessing of the animals service.
According to a Facebook post by the church, St. Francis is known for embracing all of Creation and is especially known for his love of all animals, birds, reptiles, etc. The church, located at 4000 W. Loop 250 N., organized the service on October 2nd.
St. Francis, born Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone in Assisi, Italy in either 1181 or 1182, was a 13th-century saint who led the movement of evangelical poverty. He died in his hometown in 1226 and was canonized as a saint two years later.
St. Nicholas Episcopal Church joined its fellow Episcopal parishes in commemorating St. Francis as the patron saint of ecology and Italy. The Reverend Amy Haynie, rector of St. Nicholas, spoke to Odessa CBS station KOSA News and highlighted St. Francis' dedication to poverty, chastity, obedience, and even preaching to animals if there were no people available.
Pets are an important part of people's daily lives, according to Rev. Haynie. She said, "They hear our troubles and they share every single day with us. They are very valued family members." The church's children from the Helping Hands Ministry also played a role in the celebration.
The blessing of the animals service at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church provided a meaningful way for the community to honor St. Francis of Assisi and show their love and appreciation for their furry friends.
