Gov. Greg Abbott | Office of the Texas Governor

Gov. Greg Abbott announced on October 5th that a third special session of the Texas Legislature will be held to address various issues. This comes after lawmakers met twice since the conclusion of the 88th legislative session in May.

In a press release, Abbott, a Republican, stated, "I am bringing the Texas Legislature back for Special Session #3 to continue building on the achievements we accomplished during the 88th Regular Legislative Session and two special sessions this summer."

The third special session is scheduled to begin on October 9th at 1 p.m. According to the release, lawmakers will focus on important topics such as education freedom, border security, public safety, and ending COVID-19 restrictions.

Abbott emphasized the importance of empowering parents to choose the best education option for their child, stating, "Together, we will chart a brighter future for all Texas children by empowering parents to choose the best education option for their child… Texas will also pass laws to mirror the federal immigration laws President Joe Biden refuses to enforce that will reduce illegal immigration and enhance the safety of Texans."

The governor also expressed his commitment to protecting the freedom of Texans from forced COVID-19 vaccinations. He added that all licensed law enforcement officers in Texas will be authorized to arrest or remove any person who illegally enters the state, with penalties of up to 20 years in prison for refusing to comply with removal.

It is worth noting that Austin ABC affiliate KVUE News reported that the governor has repeatedly stressed he will continue to bring legislators back if they do not pass a school choice proposal.

Abbott concluded his statement by expressing his eagerness to work with his partners in the Legislature to address these critical issues.
