U.S. Representative Jodey Arrington (R-Lubbock) emphasized the importance of legislation to keep the federal government open for at least 45 days to avoid a shutdown. Arrington was among those who voted in support of House Resolution (HR) 5860 just hours before the deadline to fund the government.
In a press release on October 1st, Arrington stated, "Supporting a short term, 45 day funding extension was the best of bad options after Republicans failed to pass a unified funding bill that included conservative wins like strong border security measures and significant cuts to woke and wasteful spending."
Arrington further explained that a government shutdown would have been unwise, as the American people should not bear the consequences of the Republicans' failure to pass bills in a timely manner. He also mentioned the need to preempt the Democratic Senate from running their spending package through the U.S. House of Representatives.
"As we continue to work through the appropriations process, I will only support bills that cut spending, root out Washington waste, and advance real border security measures," Arrington added. He emphasized the importance of addressing the nation's debt drivers and implementing a ten-year balanced budget, which would save $16 trillion.
Arrington's commitment to fiscal responsibility aligns with the GOP's fiscal path to balance. He believes this approach will address Washington's deficit spending addiction and unsustainable national debt, ultimately restoring fiscal responsibility in the nation's capital.
While the removal of U.S. Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as Speaker of the House raised concerns about a possible government shutdown, Reuters reported that the country's sovereign rating would not be impacted, according to ratings agency Fitch.
Overall, Arrington's vote in support of the 45-day funding extension reflects his dedication to avoiding a government shutdown and promoting conservative measures to address the nation's financial challenges.
