What to watch

Midland Christian has won two straight and now enter district play against an All Saints team that is coming off their first loss of the season.

The Mustangs beat Bishop Lynch 32-27 last week, led by senior quarterback Colton Newsom, who was 17-for-23 for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Brylee Perez was also on point, with the senior carrying the ball 16 times for 106 yards and a pair of scores. He was also a force receiving the ball, with a team high nine catches for 123 yards.

Senior Keller Weathers hauled in four passes for 73 yards and a score, while junior Colton Alexander had two catches for 28 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively Brady Young had 13 tackles with one for a loss, and then Mason Hosier had 10 tackles and two for a loss. Hosier also had a sack and a fumble recovery. Boston Rodriguez had a pack and a deflected pass, while Cutter Smith had a pick and two deflected passes.

All Saints won the first four games of the season, but is coming off a 38-20 loss last game to Anna High School. They have outscored opponents 184-99 this season.

Last week the Saints trailed 21-0 at halftime and while All Saints did battle to make it a four point game in the fourth quarter, Anna was able to hold them off and spoil the Saints’ homecoming.

The Saints are led by quarterback Kelden Ryan, who is a Virginia Tech commit that tallied 323 yards, three touchdowns and no picks on 21-for-30 passing. However, he was pressured much of the day and the team had trouble getting the running game going.

Last week Dougie Dodard recorded seven catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Edward Chumley led running backs with 77 yards.
